How to do battle damage with Salt!

Gear Needed:

  • -          A Model
  • -          Model Primer
  • -          Matt Spray
  • -          Base Coat (can be spray can or done with air brush)
  • -          Hair Spray (try not to get wet look or glossy)
  • -          Rock Salt
  • -          A container
  • -          Tooth Brush (kids ones I find better and smaller)

Step – 01

Make sure your model is made and all flash removed and mold lines. I recommend trying to do the model in parts like shown to get a better end result.

Step – 02

Primer the model this can be any color you wish depending on your main color. But remember this will be showing though in the end so you want it to look like a primer color. Just like when get chip on your car and you see the gray primer under that this is the effect you are going for. You could also add in an extra step here and also lightly spray a rust color over the top of the primer to make it look like it has start rusting to. Just remember to do a very light mist you still want to see mostly primer.

Step – 03

While we wait for the primer to dry get out your rock salt and container. I prefer the rock salt that comes with the grinder bit on the top and this is why. You don’t want the salt all the same damage to paint is not consistent. So you want a mix the normal size rock salt with some finer rock salt. About 50/50 mix is nice, use the grinder on the salt to make some random smaller sizes and them mix in some normal size salt. If you don’t have a grinder on the salt container you can just crush it with something.

Step – 04

For this step the amount of salt you want to put on is up to you. First we spray the model with the hair spray do a nice even coat so the model goes all glossy. Don’t overdo it as it will run and affect the end result. Now quickly before it dry’s sprinkle your salt mix all over it or where you want the damage to show. Once that is done just give it a light shake to get any really lose bits off.

Step – 05

Easy step now once the hair spray had dried spray the whole model with your base color. Note that if you get the wrong hair spray it may not dry and stay glossy and sticky we don’t want this. Make sure you use hair spray that does not say wet look or glossy.

Step – 06

Once your base color is dry get your tooth brush and run a skink full of just warm water put your model in the water and scrub all the salt off. You need to make sure it’s wet or the salt won’t come off. Don’t worry if you can’t get all the small little bits off as this adds to the effect.

Step – 07

Once you have dried out the model from taking a swim just look over it and make sure you have not missed any big bits of salt and you don’t have white powdering on the model. This is salt left on the model give it another wash and scrub. Once happy with model you want to seal all that work you have just done in, give the whole model a good coat of Matt varnish and you are done.

End of part one

Next how to detail your salt damage.

The present for my Wifes Mum

Hello All.

I have had a set of terrain to paint for the club for a while and i like the marine so much i went out and bought me one to. I still have the terrain to paint for the club but that will be just a fast spray black and dry brush i will get around to it. But my wifes mum wanted something i have painted, and i just could not let any of my completed work go so i bought this for here. I would never use it as terrain and i though it would look nice for her to put somewhere in the house.

On top of that i though i would try out a few new skills i wanted to try out. So i did what they call salt weathering. I failed to take some step steps of that part but it was spray black, spray model with hair spray while wet sprinkle Rock salt all over the place. Wait for the hair spray to dray and then spray with your base color with air brush or spray can. And once that is all dry give it a good 24h get a old tooth brush and brush all the salt off and you get this.

After a few hours detailing i am upto this point

I was board so i posted

Not much of the front of trains or warhammer, the kids bdays and major bills have taken all my cash and time. Been working away at the Rogue traders still and yes you wont get any pics for a while. Just waiting on my order from slave to painting so i can start work on a model i am doing for the wife's mum. Going to be trying some new skills i want to try and pick up on this so i will put pics up of this.

Did not win any cool stuff from Slave to painting for my titan likely due due to it not being any further complete than it was a few months back. I hope i get my base soon, my base maker is very busy with a new BF and uni so i have to be a good boy and wait or i get no epic cool base in the end. :-)

Nicon 2012

Hello All.

Not posted in a while, life has been to crazy, went to Nicon on the weekend. Its was a small tournament i think only about 25-30. Most of the field were the normal guys you see, at this point it was my 4th tournament this year and after a crazy 2days with the family before i was not really that keen to play for 2days and was thinking of not going at all. As far as playing going i should of not bothered at least half my games i could not be fucked with and just wanted to get them over and done with and onto the next one. In the end i think i came like 22nd easy bottom 3rd. I think one of my worst ranks in a few years. Only thing what made it feel like not a complete waste of time and money is. I won the raffle so might be able to sell the crappy board game i got to pay for my loss cash for a crap tournament and won best painting so i can finally stop really playing 40k altogether. Yes i hate tournaments and only go to them to win best painted. I have won this twice for two different army's, i am now just going to focus more on painting and no more building army's and just paint the models i like and want to paint and enjoy painting again not just always trying to rush to get army's finished in time. I know my paint work is twice as good as what i put on the table at these tournaments due to always in a rush to get things finished.

Hope you enjoyed that, So over all a very very crap 4day weekend.

Matt
